Good to know for Markham homes

Heritage districts

Thornhill, Unionville and Markham Village are heritage conservation districts, and Buttonville is a study area. The City says removing and replacing windows or doors in a district needs a Minor Heritage Permit.

Heritage permit comes first

The City says a building permit cannot be submitted until a heritage permit is obtained. Repairing broken panes to the original specification does not need one.

Planned communities

Cornell is described as a New Urbanist planned community, and Milliken Mills as mostly detached red brick homes from the 1970s and 80s. Measure each opening, as sizes vary with age.

Questions Markham homeowners ask

Rules depend on the work. Enlarging or altering an opening is different from replacing a window in the same rough opening, and the City's guidance is general, so confirm your plan with its Applications Administrators. Heritage areas have extra steps.

Yes, for removing and replacing windows or doors in a heritage conservation district, the City says a Minor Heritage Permit is needed. It also applies to individually designated properties. Check your address with the City first.

The colours available vary from brand to brand. The popular ones can be picked in our online configurator, and on request we can offer any RAL colour. You can browse the full range on our RAL colours page.

Use our free measurement guide, which takes you through each opening step by step. If you already have an opening size, the rough opening converter turns it into the frame size to order.

Still wondering about something? Ask the chat assistant on this page, or contact us. Want to read more first? Our guide to vinyl, PVC and uPVC windows and the RAL colours page are a good start.
