Good to know for North York homes

A city of high-rises

A City of Toronto planning workshop board reports that 92 percent of dwellings in North York Centre are in apartment buildings of five or more storeys. If you live in one, your condo board and the City come first.

Houses need a different check

For a house with one dwelling unit, the City says a same size window or door swap in an existing opening does not need a building permit. A larger or new opening does. Zoning rules still apply either way.

Planned neighbourhoods like Don Mills

Don Mills was planned in the 1950s, and many of its homes have kept original window openings. Measure each one with care, since older openings are not always a standard size.

Questions North York homeowners ask

In Toronto, replacing windows or doors in a building other than a house with one dwelling unit needs a building permit, according to the City. Condo boards often have their own rules too, so speak to yours and the City before you order.

Yes, North York is in our installation area. We deliver across Canada, and across the GTA we can arrange the fitting too, so one team carries your job from order to finish. Elsewhere we supply and you bring your own installer.

The City of Toronto says a house with one dwelling unit does not need a permit to replace a window or door in the same opening, when the size and structure are unchanged. Enlarging or adding an opening does. Confirm with the City.

Yes. Our showroom is in Pickering, on Orangebrook Court, and shows aluminium windows and doors by appointment. Book a time online or through the chat, and bring photos or measurements of your home.

The colours available vary from brand to brand. The popular ones can be picked in our online configurator, and on request we can offer any RAL colour. You can browse the full range on our RAL colours page.

Use our free measurement guide, which takes you through each opening step by step. If you already have an opening size, the rough opening converter turns it into the frame size to order.

Still wondering about something? Ask the chat assistant on this page, or contact us. Want to read more first? Our guide to vinyl, PVC and uPVC windows and the RAL colours page are a good start.
